1965 Ford Galaxie Ned Jarrett #11 Richmond Ford Motor Company / NASCAR diecast, 3rd in the University of Racing Legends Series.
Soft spoken away from the track, Ned Jarrett was a fierce competitor once he slid behind the wheel of his racecar. As a young man Jarrett entered more than 200 Sportsman events while winning State Championships in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. (Competitors were required to race in 85 to 90 events per year to win National Titles)
With 50 Grand National wins and Championships in 1961 and 1965 Jarrett cemented his place in NASCAR history, eventually being named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. Once his racing career ended following the 1966 season (Jarrett is still the only driver to retire while still Champion) he moved seamlessly into a position as a pit reporter for Universal Racing Network, then with the premier NASCAR radio network, MRN ( Motor Racing Network) and later as television analyst at CBS Sports and TNN. Jarrett is believed to be the first former driver to become a radio and television analyst, something that is commonplace today.
